Chapter Twenty

“I’LL WAIT. HE’LL want to see me.” Brianna’s voice carried down the hall.

Nova drummed her fingers against her thigh and forced a smile as she approached. She arranged a few things in her mind. Her meeting with Sergei was really the only thing that couldn’t be shuffled. His presence was still far enough in the distance it was safe to assume he’d been held up on the training field. Again. “Brianna, will you join me?”

“Priestess. Thank you. I’ve been trying to see your brother for days now.” Brianna flicked her gaze from Nova to the witch blocking the entrance to the lab wing and back to Nova.

“This is a restricted area. Come with me. I’m famished.” Nova glanced at the closed door behind the guard. “When he arrives, please tell my brother I’m sorry to miss our meeting, I was occupied.”

Nova turned, starting down the hall, feeling Brianna follow. It would probably be hours before he was back in the lab. How long had it been since he was summoned to earth to pick up Merwin? She pushed down a knot of bitter. Hattie was still missing, she’d long given up hope she’d ever see the children the sliders kidnapped, but now Cass’s boy was home. Cass would never hold her babies again. It was up to her and Orion to give them family.

“Your brother will want to see me.” Brianna leaned in, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “I have something wonderful to share with him.”

“No doubt.” Nova opened a door and waved her hand. Inside, she dismissed the servants. “Have a seat. There are a few things you need to understand. It is unfortunate I don’t have the time to do this delicately. Cielo is home and I’d like to spend as much time with her as possible.”

“Children are a blessing.” Brianna gave a weak smile. “I understand how you feel about me, but this is different.”

“They are.” Nova laughed, shocking herself by how much her laughter reminded her of Maryanne’s. When had that happened? “This is not about Woolf or Thorne or any indiscretions you’ve had in the past. This is about my brother, who is my world.”

Brianna dropped her smile. “Then you’ll want to listen to me. I have great news for him.”

“Let me guess.” Nova crossed her legs. “My brother and you had a glorious night. Perhaps two, three, or even four, glorious nights together. He made you feel like the most important witch in the entire court.”

Brianna sank into the couch.

Nova glanced at the table. Where was the candy dish? The lab wing must have been understaffed. With all the moves and changes, they were bound to have gaps. “Mysteriously enough, his work suddenly called him away and you haven’t seen him since. Am I close? I don’t need the details.”

“Yes, but we’re going to...” Brianna stopped when Nova raised her hand.

“You are going to have a powerful baby.” She held her gaze, watching the tears form and wondering why it didn’t bother her.
