Chapter Twenty
âIâLL WAIT. HEâLL want to see me.â Briannaâs voice carried down the hall.
Nova drummed her fingers against her thigh and forced a smile as she approached. She arranged a few things in her mind. Her meeting with Sergei was really the only thing that couldnât be shuffled. His presence was still far enough in the distance it was safe to assume heâd been held up on the training field. Again. âBrianna, will you join me?â
âPriestess. Thank you. Iâve been trying to see your brother for days now.â Brianna flicked her gaze from Nova to the witch blocking the entrance to the lab wing and back to Nova.
âThis is a restricted area. Come with me. Iâm famished.â Nova glanced at the closed door behind the guard. âWhen he arrives, please tell my brother Iâm sorry to miss our meeting, I was occupied.â
Nova turned, starting down the hall, feeling Brianna follow. It would probably be hours before he was back in the lab. How long had it been since he was summoned to earth to pick up Merwin? She pushed down a knot of bitter. Hattie was still missing, sheâd long given up hope sheâd ever see the children the sliders kidnapped, but now Cassâs boy was home. Cass would never hold her babies again. It was up to her and Orion to give them family.
âYour brother will want to see me.â Brianna leaned in, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. âI have something wonderful to share with him.â
âNo doubt.â Nova opened a door and waved her hand. Inside, she dismissed the servants. âHave a seat. There are a few things you need to understand. It is unfortunate I donât have the time to do this delicately. Cielo is home and Iâd like to spend as much time with her as possible.â
âChildren are a blessing.â Brianna gave a weak smile. âI understand how you feel about me, but this is different.â
âThey are.â Nova laughed, shocking herself by how much her laughter reminded her of Maryanneâs. When had that happened? âThis is not about Woolf or Thorne or any indiscretions youâve had in the past. This is about my brother, who is my world.â
Brianna dropped her smile. âThen youâll want to listen to me. I have great news for him.â
âLet me guess.â Nova crossed her legs. âMy brother and you had a glorious night. Perhaps two, three, or even four, glorious nights together. He made you feel like the most important witch in the entire court.â
Brianna sank into the couch.
Nova glanced at the table. Where was the candy dish? The lab wing must have been understaffed. With all the moves and changes, they were bound to have gaps. âMysteriously enough, his work suddenly called him away and you havenât seen him since. Am I close? I donât need the details.â
âYes, but weâre going to...â Brianna stopped when Nova raised her hand.
âYou are going to have a powerful baby.â She held her gaze, watching the tears form and wondering why it didnât bother her.
